Pedestrian crash is second felony DWI for Goldens Bridge woman

State and local Lewisboro police have taken a 69-year-old suspected drunk driver into custody for a crash that hospitalized a Westchester County pedestrian. The alleged drunk driving accident is not the first arrest for driving while under the influence for the Goldens Bridge woman.

According to police records, a 52-year-old Goldens Bridge resident and his wife were walking along Brundige Drive around 4:00 p.m. Authorities noted that the pedestrians were walking "properly while facing traffic," heading northbound along the shoulder of the southbound side of the road. The allegedly intoxicated driver was traveling the wrong way along Brundige Drive, moving northbound on the southbound side, when she struck the walker from behind.

Disabled landscaper receives $11 million car crash settlement

A car accident permanently disabled a Westchester County landscaper. A jury in the victim's civil lawsuit recently divided the blame and expenses for the car crash among the driver, the car owner, the accident victim's employer and the injured worker.

Three years ago, the landscape worker was hit by a car as he unloaded a work trailer in Tarrytown. The jury decided the employer, Sleepy Hollow Landscaping, shouldered 60 percent of the accident responsibility in the $11.2 million judgment. At the time of the accident, the landscaper's vehicle was parked along Benedict Avenue. Safety cones and a small sign posted around the work zone were found to be inadequate employee protection.

Probation, not prison, for Queens' driver who hit, killed child

A Brooklyn girl, on summer vacation with her grandparents, was struck by a car as she ran toward the sound of a Queens' ice cream truck. The 6-year-old suffered severe injuries and died less than a week after the accident.

Court papers say the accused driver's Mitsubishi Montero struck the child as she darted out onto 104th Avenue in Jamaica, Queens. The driver claimed he did not see the child run into the street. Speeding was not a factor in the accident, but alcohol use was.

"Abbagail's Law" gains state Senate victory

The New York State Senate overwhelmingly approved legislation that would bring charges against intoxicated adult passengers who supervise inexperienced drivers. "Abbagail's Law" is one of two proposals circulating among state lawmakers meant to protect younger drivers and passengers from indirectly-caused drugged or drunk driving accidents.

The bills were drafted following the death of an 8-year-old Orleans County girl in a 2009 motor vehicle accident. A 17-year-old cousin, under the supervision of the child's inebriated father, was blamed for a crash that killed the girl. No law existed to criminalize the intoxication of the supervising adult.

Jamaica school bus crash injures 1 pedestrian, injures 5 others

Neighborhood residents in Jamaica, Queens said that a car blew through an intersection and caused a recent bus crash that hurt six people. According to Cedar Manor residents who heard and saw the accident, the collision vaulted a school bus over a curb and into the side of a house. A pedestrian was struck between the roadway and the residence.

A neighbor, who was standing outside at the time of the bus accident, heard the sounds of a "bang" and a "crash." Another witness claims the accident happened because a Nissan Altima failed to stop at a red light at Liverpool Street and Glassboro Avenue and t-boned the bus.

Driver who killed Port Chester student gets interim probation

A Nazareth College student from Port Chester died from serious injuries she received in a car accident near Rochester last winter. The driver of the vehicle, a 21-year-old fellow student, pleaded guilty to vehicular manslaughter charges and was sentenced recently to interim probation.

The fatal car crash in Pittsford happened one year ago this month. Police reports say the driver's car slid out of control on snow-packed French Road and struck another vehicle. The Westchester County accident victim, one of three passengers, sustained severe injuries to her head and died two weeks after the accident. Another passenger, a 40-year-old Fairport woman, also was hospitalized with serious injuries, but survived the ordeal.

Sons of nurse killed in Bronx bus crash receive $9.5M award

A $9.5 million award has been ordered by a Bronx Supreme Court for the family of a surgical nurse, who died in 2009 after being struck by an Atlantic Express Transportation motor coach.

Officials for the Staten Island company claim they did not know the driver blamed for the bus accident had an extensive criminal history. The employee apparently hid more than 30 convictions and a driver's license suspension from the company that hired him for the $8-an-hour bus-driving job.

NYPD says officer's BAC test delayed hours after injury crash

The complications of responsibility following an injury accident are magnified when alcohol is a suspected factor. When the accused in a drunk driving accident is also a member of the law enforcement community, an internal police investigation is standard.

Two Manhattan police officers were involved in a single-vehicle accident on the way home from a recent, precinct holiday party. The officer in the passenger seat suffered a serious head wound and was hospitalized. Driver intoxication was suspected.

Barryville teen accused of killing cousin in DWI crash

An 18-year-old Barryville teen may spend more than the next half of his life in prison, if he is convicted of felony charges related to a drunk driving accident that killed his cousin and left two other teens with severe injuries. The accused driver is being held in jail on $10,000 bail.

The fatal accident was reported just before 3 a.m. in Lumberland. Authorities say the 2003 Mercedes Benz driven by the teen swerved across Haring Road and struck a tree.

Driver from 1 of 3 Queensboro Bridge crashes sues NYC

A victim of one of three serious car accidents on the same Queensboro Bridge exit ramp has brought a negligence lawsuit against the city of New York. An additional suit is being considered by business owners whose stores were damaged in two of the accidents.

A 39-year-old man, who lost an arm in a car crash on the bridge exit last April, is holding the city, its Economic Development Corporation and the Department of Transportation liable. The man was hurt when his Volkswagen Jetta went out of control, hitting the storefronts of a hair salon and a restaurant. The driver's 40-year-old female passenger died from injuries she received in the accident.
