NYC official: Bike-share makes city vulnerable to liability

A new bike-share program in New York City, starting this month, has an official numbers cruncher worried. The city comptroller thinks the city is unprepared for the liability blowback when rented Citi Bikes are involved in car accidents.

Ten thousand bikes that aren't already weaving through New York could be added to city streets by this time next year. The plan allows people to rent bikes in one part of the city and drop them off at one of more than 400 proposed locations in Manhattan, Brooklyn and Queens.

New York driver who killed teen bicyclist was allegedly drunk

A driver's behavior at the time of a car accident has long-reaching, often life-changing effects for the motorist, victims and families. Negligence results from poor decision making, including drivers' choices to operate a motor vehicle impaired by drugs or alcohol, talk or text on a cellphone, flee an accident scene and fail to try to aid victims who are hurt.

A 14-year-old boy and a friend were riding bicycles around 8:50 p.m. on a recent weeknight in Lancaster, New York. At least one witness saw a sport-utility vehicle on Lake Avenue weave from the southbound lanes, across the road divider to the opposite side of the road.

Inattention and carelessness is often blamed on young and inexperienced drivers, but extensive experience behind the wheel is no guarantee that a driver is roadworthy. The slower reaction time and sensory limitations of some more seasoned drivers can also be hazards; contributing to car accidents involving damage, injury and wrongful death.

Brooklyn police say an 80-year-old driver careened down 73rd Street in a Mercedes-Benz, struck two vehicles and sent a bicyclist to the hospital with life-threatening injuries.
